Overcoming Winter Depression Using Resistance In Your Favor
As my day went on yesterday, I kept telling myself, "You'll make it to the gym at some point" but as the day progressed - I found I was slowly but steadily convincing myself that it was okay to skip my workout, but with no real reason aside from the generic Winter excuses one could come up with.
It's cooold, tis' the season to just bask in home-body glory, sip your tea, eat your crumpets and continue pretending like you're dead to the world (or maybe that's just me being a granny in a 25 year old's body - but if you resonate at any given age then I have some gems to share with you)...
Whether you work seated at an office job, are moving around at a job that requires you to be on your feet, or perhaps you have the luxury of working from home - we can be subject to feeling S.A.D. aka Seasonal Affective Disorder as we ease towards Winter months especially. Many of us are faced with the inevitable temptation of succumbing to resistance. But do that and you may find yourself slipping into stagnancy - with a growing motivation to stay inside.
And hell, I don't blame you. (or maybe, I do a little bit - but I'm here to help)
Resistance can come in many forms and I'm learning more and more about this as I delve into the 'War of Art' by Steven Pressfield. You see, procrastination, resistance and self-sabotage all coincide. Resistance can be found in the simplest of life's pleasures: Food, sex, that new Netflix series, the mindless time spent swiping on dating apps, whatever it be for you...
It's sure as hell a lot warmer inside than it is outside and if you have someone to snuggle up to then that can feel like all the more reason to stay inside. Now, I'm not saying that there's anything particularly wrong with this and that you should be ashamed of yourself - It only really becomes an issue if that's what you're choosing over and over and still wondering why you feel sluggish or unaccomplished.
As my favourite writer Mark Manson stated, as a human we are "basically this walking, lumbering habit machine." So, it's imperative to consistently monitor ourselves and our habits (always but especially) during these months.
But back to what I was saying about yesterday, by evening - A part of me was convinced that I wasn't going to make it to the gym. Not for lack of desire but lack of motivation because by that point, I had already convinced myself how comfortable I was in my Eeyore onesie and that tomorrow was a brand new day for me to flourish, even though that's what I had told myself the day prior.
And so - I knew inside that I really did want to go to the gym, Because not only do I have goals and a career that revolves around looking good and being strong but it feels really good to exercise.
I am fairly consistent with my gym visits but yesterday in particular was challenging. Even more so that I kept putting it off throughout the day. But you can bet your bottom dollar that I forced myself into some workout-wear and went to the gym after a good plant-based dose of Primal Herb's energy + stamina powders (which were recommended to me by my friend whose a former UFC fighter - so it must be good, right? SHIT YEAH, he was right as this stuff always enhances my performance) and despite not feeling like it - I pulled through and had the best workout I've had in a long time. Not only that, but I felt amazing during and afterwards.
In showing myself that I was powerful enough to overcome that resistance and in physically (lovingly) forcing myself to get ready and show up, my inner power had been ignited from within and transmuted all that resistance that I had felt - into fuel for my fire. I was present, sweating blissfully and I felt unstoppable. I felt powerful but not in an overpowering way. This is a sensation you too can 100% accomplish by dedicating time to your well-being through physical activity (or see list below).
Years of scientific studies have shown that exercise is an elixir for depression. As little as 20-30 days of walking alone can ward of depression in people of all ages. It is apart of our biological design as humans to feel good physically, mentally and emotionally when we exercise. It aids in our overall long-term survival and serves to feed a very fundamental aspect of our functionality.
Aside from self-care in the form of moderate exercise, this is a prime time to hone-in on a few different focus points I'll note here:
The lessons learnt in 2018: It's good to be willing to take painful looks at yourself, the obstacles you faced and how you reacted (or could've reacted) to them.
Preparation for 2019: What you wish to bring to the table and what you can focus on now, that will benefit you leading into the new year.
Your overall health: Your health is ultimately the foundation for your life. So, eating well, grounding your energy by implementing a healthy dose of routine (e.g., every morning I start off with a cup of tea and a journaling session and that's been very beneficial in connecting to self and setting the tone for the rest of my day), taking time for things like at-home spa nights, indulging in a good book on a topic of interest, researching and/or supporting an organization that aims to better the world - which in turn is a really great way to create more wholesomeness in your life and a sense of contribution and belonging, getting yourself outside to soak in the subtle tones of nature as a reminder that you too are apart of it... Just to name a few ideas.
